Where The Crawdads Sing - Delia Owen

43073152

Synopsis:

A novel about an young woman determined to make her way in the wilds of North Carolina, and the two men that will break her isolation open.

For years, rumors of the "Marsh Girl" have haunted Barkley Cove, a quiet town on the North Carolina coast. She's barefoot and wild; unfit for polite society. So in late 1969, when handsome Chase Andrews is found dead, the locals immediately suspect Kya Clark.

But Kya is not what they say. Abandoned at age ten, she has survived on her own in the marsh that she calls home. A born naturalist with just one day of school, she takes life lessons from the land, learning from the false signals of fireflies the real way of this world. But while she could have lived in solitude forever, the time comes when she yearns to be touched and loved. Drawn to two young men from town, who are each intrigued by her wild beauty, Kya opens herself to a new and startling world--until the unthinkable happens.

Review:

First of all HAPPY PUBLICATION DAY to Delia Owen and The Crawdads Sing which is published today. Grace Vincent contacted me a while back and asked if I would like to read and review this book for its week or the day of its publication. I read the synopsis and instantly knew I had to read it, it pulled me in I simply couldn't wait to get my hands on it.

I first picked the book up and was drawn into the story right away, I felt an emotional connections with Kya who is a abandoned child with very little. We watch the story unfold, the times switching from us watching Kya grow up to the current day investigating the death of Chase Andrews up until the two lines somehow meet.

From a young age you can see Kya trying to grow up quicker than shes capable of just so she can survive. Kya’s siblings are older, and they flee, leaving her alone with her father. She learns to care for herself at a young age because she has to. Kya is uneducated by choice and circumstance, though the town attempted to get her to attend at first. Even without schooling, she is caring and smart, as she learns the ways of life through the marsh and all it has to teach her. I fell for her immediately, I just wanted to be there with her and protect and help her. Her character is so easily loveable and realistic in how she is portrayed in her situations. Tate is a heart warming character, he has known her all of her life but now that she is older she sees him in a different light and for the first time, she begins to feel real love. He takes the time and teaches her how to read which opens up the world to her. its such a beautifully portrayed relationship I often found myself in awe of them.

She loves the marsh and all that inhabit it. She collects many things and categorizes them. From the books Tate brings her she learns biology, math, how things grow and change and she is fascinated by the marsh.

After being disappointed in her relationship she had with Tate she finally decides that perhaps she could be more trusting and goes on to share things with Chase, a boy from town who tells her he loves her and talks about a future. But everyone always leaves Kya in the end. Kya has seen Chase around throughout her life and in my eyes he's a horrible kid from the start not only in his behaviour but then towards Kya. Time passes after betrayal happens and then Chase is found dead in the Marsh and all fingers of the locals except for Jumpin' and his wife, are pointed towards Kya the 'Marsh Girl'.

This book is heart breaking and yet has plenty of heart warming moments. There's betrayal and trust and so many opposites that make this book so great. Owen has written a truly amazing story that I'm sure will continue to be one of the best for a long time to come. I cant give the book anything less than a 5/5 for the creativity, emotions, imagery, every aspect of this book pulled me in and I didn't see the ending coming. Ill be sure to look out for Owen's future work and I hope some of you grab a copy for yourself to see what all of the fuss is about.

All We Know Book Club

IT'S HERE!

Back in December, me and my best friend partnered up to bring the world another Book Club. Admittedly we have very little to no experience with this sort of thing, we just share the mutual love for books and authors.

It took up time to figure out even the most basic of things like what we would actually be called, in the end we settled for All We Know, we just felt like it fitted and so we let it stick. The logo was a lot less thought out, I chose a font, and a picture from just a few in a list, picked a colour and arranged them into a way I felt looked good and the end result wasn't at all bad.

From then till now has been a while and somehow it feels a lot longer if I'm honest. In those days Sophie and I have sat and spoken about the finer details of the club. The Club went live on Goodreads on the 30th of December 2016, since then we've been calling for members who just urge to discuss their opinions on books and authors with us.

We came to a joint decision to not hold a discussion this month just don't to the fact it would have been short notice for everyone and we didn't exactly have people knocking on the door to join. So the first book club in February.

Below is all you need to know;

  • Book Club is held on the 2nd to last Saturday of each month
  • The first book club will be held on the Saturday 18th February 2017
  • Time is not relevant due to personal schedules and time zones, just discuss and respond whenever you can once the set discussion day has come.
  • Follow the rules of the book club which are displayed on the page itself.
  • After the initial discussion of the book we will give suggestions of the next book in the same session, this then gives everyone 1 week to get a hold of the book before the month starts which will then give them 2-3 weeks to read the book at their own pace and prepare for the discussion.

  • If you feel like we at the book club for you come on over and join us (click here to be taken to the book club page), introduce yourself on our first discussion and if in time, suggest your book idea for the first ever book up to discuss on the 18th of February, then get reading and join us later to discuss.

Inkitt Android App Launches Globally

The Inkitt App brings thousands of novels by indie authors to android.

Inkitt empowers readers and publishers to discover world’s next best sellers

BERLIN, JANUARY 7, 2017: Inkitt, the world’s first readers and data-driven book publishing house is introducing an Android app for phones and tablets, globally available from today.

Inkitt’s iOS app became available back in November and was well received by users: The app was not only featured on the US App Store but also on numerous other App Stores around the world, as well as on the front page of Product Hunt, ranking in the top 10 in Tech.

Following the warm welcome by the iOS community, and in order to meet the demand of their own fast growing user base, Inkitt is now bringing their digital library with thousands of novels by emerging authors to Android devices.

It was a great reward to see Inkitt featured as a top app in numerous App Stores around the world and receive such great feedback from users” says Inkitt’s Founder and CEO, Ali Albazaz. “Readers were really excited about the iOS app but kept asking when we’re launching on Android too. We heard them, worked really hard and today we’re bringing Inkitt to Android devices. All readers will now be able to discover tomorrow’s bestsellers on the go and read great novels by upcoming authors wherever they are.”

Inkitt for Android - 4 key features:

Access to thousands of novels from all fiction genres: fantasy, sci-fi, mystery, thriller, horror, romance, drama, action, adventure, YA and more
Personalized reading suggestions: hand-picked novels based on a reader’s favorite fiction genres
Customizable look to match user preferences (e.g. font size, color combinations)
Online/Offline: readers can save novels to their offline library to access them anytime

Beyond being a platform connecting aspiring authors with book lovers, Inkitt’s mission is to become the world’s fairest publishing house: Its in-house developed algorithm analyzes reading behavior to determine the potential of a novel to become the next bestseller. Using this unique data-driven approach, Inkitt wants to ensure that great works by new and talented writers never again stay in the dark.

Since July, Inkitt has published 7 novels: Catalyst Moon: Incursion by Lauren L. Garcia (Fantasy), Just Juliet by Charlotte Reagan (YA Romance), I Was A Bitch by Emily Ruben (YA Romance Mystery), Esper Files by Egan Brass (SciFi) and Caged by Onaiza Khan (Psychological Thriller),  King’s Lament by Lilia Blanc (Fantasy Romance) and Three Fat Singletons by J.M. Bartholomew (Humor Romance), six of which became bestsellers on Amazon.

About Inkitt

The Last Grey Sky - Natalie Scrivener

Image result for the last grey sky natalie scrivener

Synopsis:
There were two things that brought the world to its knees. First the colours. Then the insanity.

Review:

So I found this book on an app called Inkitt, it just attracted me instantly and I couldn't turn away. The book is all about Gwen, who is part of a camp who are trying to survive in the world that is overtaken by a disease that makes you see colour when infected. After shocks which included seeing the execution of an infected camp member and later seeing colour, she is faced with 2 choices to leave, or be put down. At first she aimed to leave and die alone away from her friends so she isn't any harm to her campmate, but after a short while she cant find it within herself to do it, that's when Ryan who she had encountered in camp finds her, begging for him to do it all over again like she had seen him do before, she begs to be put down by him because he unlike her is stronger than she is. He can't face it, she's just a child and after a short argument, they both run away together, away from the threat of death towards the hope of surviving without fear.

Like they both thought, after a while as they head towards the city where they heard a cure was being made, they both end up seeing colour and Gwen holds her guilt to infecting Ryan close to heart but he doesn't blame her at all, he knew the risk and took it anyway. The city sounds like its too good to be true but is it or not?  it's really a book to read if you want to find out if all is as it seems.

The characters were so easy to connect with, I felt the pain for Gwen as she experiences the highs and lows of her journey to surviving the new world. The highs were in fact that the colours she experience were truly beautiful. She's 17 years old and being only a year younger than me I felt like it was much easier to connect with her although I'm not living in a world like she is, but I felt like we had certain emotions and reactions to certain situations that mirrored each other.

Ryan was a great character too, he was willing to risk all for a girl he knew very little about and he didn't give it a second thought. He was a gentleman and really decent male character, he was the sort you wished were real because he seems better than half of the guys you actually know in real life.

There are so many characters that come into the story, they're all well written, well explored and each have a great part to play in the unravelling of the plot. The plot was very unique and beautiful, I was really gripped by each page. The ending blew me away really, each chapter blew me away so it all came together and blew me half the way around the world. It's definitely a book worth reading if you like adventures and action and if you're looking for something that will keep its hold on you. I really want to speak to the author and have a good old chat about it all. its a 5/5 from me with no second thought needed.

Caged - Onaiza Khan

32871504

Synopsis:

"Keep your mind right, put your body in action and let your spirit guide you.”

These are the words keeping her sane after her husband takes her from India and into isolation in northern Canada. But after three months with only a servant, a television and the screams of another captive keeping her company, she begins to lose touch with reality - even forgetting her own name.
With the help of an unexpected ally, she discovers an inner strength and powers previously unknown; changing her perspective and realigning her past, present and future.

Review:

Our protagonist Noor, is being held by her husband, she hasn't left the house in 3 months, and longs to be free. Her days are consistent, the routine she is used to is suddenly broken when her captor begins to break It in unusual was that seem nice  us but make our character weary which turns my feeling of the actions being nice into being suspicious. After all he has beaten and abused her over her time as his prisoner.

After her routine is broken in small, subtle ways she finds the other human who she has been hearing being tortured and abused. However he is kept differently to her, Noor finds him chained to a chair and in the dark. To anyone normal this is suspicious.
In short they both plot escape, and it works, but she has moments of panic as to whether she can actually trust him, or will she find herself worse of. It turns out that all is not as it seems and it causes Noor to call in toe question the whole 3 months she was held captive in her own home by her husband Daniel.

I felt really odd about this book, at the beginning I was really into it, there was a beautiful and well described dream scene which really had me interested but pretty much everything from there on out wasn't exactly brilliant. The plot itself was actually a very smart and cunning one, you're lead to believe one thing when in fact its something, not entirely but somewhat different. I felt like the story was rushed, that the ending was important and you were needed to get there urgently. The book has potential, it really does, I really thought I'd be absorbed into this book and have emotions and connections to the places and people but I didn't, I felt very little towards each character, I just didn't click with them and I was unable to care for them as much as I usually would.

Its classed as a supernatural thriller, psychological thriller but I'm not really sure I feel comfortable using those genres with this book. I mean it works as s psychological thriller I suppose, but I don't feel like it really emphasised the psychological state of Norah's character.

I really appreciate receiving a copy of this book and that I was asked for an honest review. For those who like fast pace books that you can get through really quickly his is one for you. Though I didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would I give this book a 3 out of 5 and I wish Onaiza all the best with the success of Caged and all of her projects in the future.

Top Ten Tuesday- Books ive Read by Reccomendation

Now there's only ever been one book recommendation made to me which I can remember which was from the lovely Peter Monn where he recommended The Girl In The Red Coat. I actually bought the book a few days after he recommended it. I still haven't read it though, my mother took it on holiday with her after me and my sister had already been on holiday and the book got a touch of sun. the book still sits on my shelf though and I'm working to read it as soon as possible.

I'm sorry there's no list this week, but do go and check out all the lists on blogs listed at the bottom of The Broke and The Bookish' Top Ten Tuesday post.

Top Ten Tuesday - Books I Stil Havent Read

So the original topic was 10 books owned before blogging that I still haven't read, well back in 2014 just before I started out this blog, I really didn't have many books beside the classic Harry Potter books and over 15 books by Jaqueline Wilson stored in a box. But now I have 62 books on my bookshelf alone which is at least 34 individual  authors. Its safe to say I have not read all 62 books on my shelf, maybe 41 of them but not all 62 so here on this list I'm going to list 10 books I have yet to read which will also include current reads, read for review eBooks and eBooks.

  1. Eden Summer by Liz Flanagan (preview copy won from Maximumpopbooks competition)
  2. Vampire Diaries 1&2  by L.J Smith
  3. Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
  4. The Girl In The Red Coat by Kate Hamer
  5. On The Other Side by Carrie Hope Fletcher
  6. Always With Love by Giovanna Fletcher
  7. Ravens Peak by Lincoln Cole
  8. The Summer That Melted Everything by Tiffany McDaniel
  9. Inevitable Ascension by V.K.McAllister (Husband and Wife duo)

Aunt Edna’s Money

So aunt Edna and I weren't exactly best buddies but when the inevitable man dressed in black came to her door and knocked 3 times before being let in, Edna passed everything down to me. We all knew the end was close with her, she had recently been wanting more time with each of us separately and even then that was the first time I had seen her and spoken to her face to face in over 5 years.

I had heard stories about my Aunt Edna, some of them I could believe, others I could not, but even this moment now I could not believe her whole estate was mine. I had read her will and all the terms which included instructions on what to do so that wretched unlikable cousin of mine, Wilfred got none of it.

Meeting up with my aunt for the first time in over 5 years was nerve wrecking but all of those nerves simply melted away when we drank at a great little coffee shop and spoke of music and books. Even after all of the bad stories I had heard about the woman, she was the most likable person I had met and we clearly bonded. She had expressed her concern for her own health as she leant back arched over the table holding firmly to my hands, then she expressed her concern of Wilfred who she feared would do anything to take all she had once she had passed but against my wishes she dropped the subject quickly and got back to talking about books.

As I browsed the isles of the old bookstore we shared a love for days after her death, I couldn't help but think of wretched Wilfred and the rules in my aunts will. I run my fingers over the spines of many books, picking out those which caught my attention before adding them to my pile at the counter. by the time I was finished I had bought many hundreds of pounds worth of books but it was all in the name of inspiration and research.

You see my aunts wishes were to be cremated, and not only that, but her ashes mixed in with ink, which she believed I could use to create a masterpiece of a book manuscript with within a year, and now I browse the same bookstore, looking over a small crowd of people who had gathered for the unveiling of the book now available in store. The main characters name? Edna of course.

Top Ten Tuesday - Ten Characters I Love But Others Seem To Dislike

Unfortunately due to my lack of book reading friends and such I actually can't make this list. The few friends I have who are into books, tend to have the same opinion on characters as I do.

It does make me a little sad that I haven't been able to do its list even though I tried so many times. I hope you all forgive me.

However Top Ten Tuesday is bought to our by
